Your Camping Meal - Easy Camping Meals

Have you ever been on a camping trip and had the most amazing campfire meal but then realized you hadn’t packed any side dishes? You have good food and everyone is just enjoying it. You didn’t pack side dishes so you had to take a few basic items like cornbread, potato salad, or hot dogs, or whatever you might want to put on your plate as a side dish. When you think about all the other side dishes, you’ll find that there are more than you can eat in one meal.

Side Dish

If you don’t have a large family, you might not need to worry about adding a side dish. But if you do then you are going to be having a very busy summer! Camping meals are meant to be enjoyed by a group of people so you should be sure to take some sort of condiment or side dish that will help feed everyone.

Horseradish

A very basic side dish would be horseradish. This is the perfect side dish for a spicy, chicken, turkey, or beef dish.

To make horseradish in a pressure cooker, boil the horseradish in water for a minute, drain and then add some brown sugar and simmer for about four minutes. Pour into your pressure cooker and cook for two hours. If you are looking for a milder horseradish, just use the sugar and vinegar.

Black Beans

These are an extremely popular side dish and you’ll find that they can be prepared in a variety of ways. Many campers like to add the black beans to their camping meal and have them with a small salad and potato salad. If you are really looking for a more flavorful side dish, then you should add a splash of chili powder to the beans and you’ll have a flavorful combination for your camping meal.

An interesting idea would be to take vegetables or herbs that a family member or friend’s tastes, and prepare them as a vegetable side dish. This idea is much less complicated, but it can be much tastier. You could do this for a family gathering and give them a variety of vegetables prepared in different ways.

Best Side Dish

In addition to the three listed above, beans and black beans are a great vegetable dish that you can prepare. When preparing beans and black beans, be sure to rinse them before cooking. Many people like to mix beans with some beans and salsa to create a more interesting side dish.

If you are entertaining or not preparing a large group, and you do have time to prepare a side dish, try making cornbread. There are many recipes for cornbread, but try making a grilled cornbread to see how it will taste. In addition to taste, you will find that when you are not cooking a large amount of food, cornbread can be cooked in the oven or even over the barbeque and keep it warm for several days in the cooler weather.

Fruit

The fruit is a great side dish if you prepare it correctly. Of course, you will want to make sure that you have fresh fruit at the campground you are staying at because canned fruit has a tendency to get too dried out and crunchy. However, if you find that you cannot locate your favorite fruits, try and make the best of what you can, and you will find that many fruits are quite delicious when prepared right. Use as many fruit ideas as you can, such as apple sauce, dried fruit, and prunes.

Cooking over the campfire is easy, but it will take a little longer than you might like to get your cooking down. If you do plan on cooking over the campfire, you will have to make sure that you can set the campfire up properly for your stove and firewood. And then you will need to make sure that you have the necessary tools like the cookware, the matches, and other small things that you might need.

Final Thoughts

You will also need a small frying pan, utensils cups, measuring spoons, ladles, and food storage containers. A crockpot would also be handy, but it is not a must. If you are prepared for anything, you can have a campfire and grill and cook without a stove, so what is important is that you have the ability to prepare your meals in advance and have a little bit of cooking ahead of time, so you can store your cooking products in advance so you don’t have to make many trips to the store.
